NPR Road Trips: Family Vacations: Stories that ...

With generous splashes of popular culture and human interest, the NPR Road Trips series introduces you not only to far-off locations and unusual destinations, but to the people who inhabit them - and seek them out. Each story focuses on real locations, real people, and real history in the thought-provoking, imaginative and entertaining way you've come to expect from NPR. We all have memories of family vacations - some successful, some less so, and some gone terribly awry. When it comes to reporting colorful, compelling tales of family vacations, no one does it better than National Public Radio. The stories gathered on this collection are entertaining, provocative and moving. Like Laura Lorson's "Hard-Earned Lessons from the Family Road Trip" in which she recalls endless hours in a hot car, eating junk food and listening to AM radio. And "Setting Sail with Family, Imperfections in Tow", Marion Winik's account of a not-so-perfect family reunion at sea. And "Family Camping" in which commentator Joel Achenbach points out that camping is a serious sport. NPR knows that everyone has a dream vacation, but many of us are settling for economic-reality vacations. So Tom Goldman asks, "Who Needs a Fancy Cruise If You've Got Inner Tubes?" And when Robert Smith learns the price of Broadway tickets to The Little Mermaid ($121 each!), he takes a more frugal route, piling the family into his Honda Civic and heading to the drive-in. Warmly remembered, richly detailed, these stories invite you to share in the journey of others and may inspire you to plan your own. Contents: Introduction by Noah Adams Hard-Learned Lessons from the Family Road Trip Family Camping Educational Vacations The History of the Vacation The Low-Cost Glories of the Drive-In Theater Pink Jeep Chronicles Taking the Great American Road Trip, Google-Style A Summer 1. When 11-year-old Jack Martel crawls out of his pup tent on the first morning of his camping trip with his mom in Acadia National Park, he notices right away that something isn’t right. Where is his mom’s tent, and their rental car? And where is his mom? Any other kid might panic, might even go to the police. But Jack isn’t like other kids. And his mom isn’t like other moms. Jack knows that it’s up to him to find his mom before someone figures out what’s happened and separates them forever. But finding his mom in the state of Maine isn’t the same as finding her in their neighborhood back in Boston. With nothing but a small plastic elephant to keep him company, Jack begins his search, starting with all the places they’d planned to visit together. But as the search drags on, a dark thought plagues him: once he finds his mom, will he ever be able to forgive her? 1. Language: English. Narrator: William Dufris. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (formerly the NASCAR SuperTruck Series presented by Craftsman and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series) is a pickup truck racing series owned and operated by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. It is the only series in all of NASCAR to race modified production pickup trucks and is one of the three national divisions of NASCAR, together with the Nationwide Series and the top level Sprint Cup. On December 3, 2007, SEARS Holdings Corporation announced that, at the conclusion of the 2008 season, its Craftsman brand would no longer sponsor the series. Craftsman had been the title sponsor since 1995, the year NASCAR founded the series. On November 13, 2009, Ron Hornaday won his fourth championship with 1 race remaining in the season.

Top Trails: Shenandoah National Park
24,90 CHF *
zzgl. 3,50 CHF Versand

'Top Trails: Shenandoah National Park' saves readers the time and frustration of finding the perfect hikes to suit their desires. Not only are there hundreds of miles of trails running like veins down and along a narrow mountain spine, but with millions of guests annually, Shenandoah National Park is a heavily visited destination. This book was conceived to make the backcountry majesty of Shenandoah more accessible to visitors. This easy-access, reference type guide presents a variety of hikes from which to choose. The majority of the hikes steer you toward the most scenic areas, giving you the opportunity to enjoy your time on the trail instead of behind someone's car. Most hikes seek solitude to maximize your Shenandoah experience. However, as the subtitle of this book suggests, there are some 'must do' hikes that are popular. Consequently, a few hikes traverse popular and potentially crowded areas. Each hike has a 'best times' that will help you manage the trails to your advantage. Day hiking is the best and most popular way to 'break into' the Shenandoah wilderness. But for those with the inclination to see the mountain cycle from day to night and back again, many hikes in this book can be used by backpackers as well. Backpackers must follow park backcountry camping regulations and practice 'leave no trace' wilderness-use etiquette. Backpackers can capture the changing moods of the mountains as day turns to night, as weather cycles with the sun, as the permanent park residents go about their business of surviving and reproducing. With the Top Trails winning formula of easy-to-follow maps for every hike, trail-feature charts, feature icons, 'don't get lost' trail milestones, and GPS waypoints, readers can easily identify the right trail for their interests, abilities, and available time.
